Strawberry Banana Smoothie

This easy strawberry banana smoothie recipe makes a quick, creamy breakfast with milk, fresh fruit, oats and cashews. It takes only a few minutes to blend and is filling enough to see you through the morning, especially with the optional protein powder. A very ripe banana works perfectly here, making this a handy way to use fruit that’s looking a little past its best. What’s in an Easy Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe?

This strawberry protein smoothie uses a short list of everyday ingredients.

  • Liquid: Full-cream milk, although you can use reduced-fat or plant-based milk if preferred.
  • Fruit: Overripe banana (fresh or frozen) and fresh strawberries – although frozen works too, but does provide a different flavour. Frozen strawberries and banana will create a thicker, colder drink, so you may not need as much ice.
  • Boosters: Oats and raw cashews both add body to the smoothie. The cashews can be left out if you need nut-free. Alternatively, you can also substitute for 1 tablespoon of chia seeds.
  • Protein powder: Plain or vanilla protein powder adds an optional protein boost and thickens the smoothie. However, if you don’t want to use protein powder, simply leave it out.
  • Ice: A few ice cubes keep everything properly cold and refreshing. Use less when blending with frozen fruit.

How to Make A Strawberry Protein Smoothie?

Step 1: Pour the milk into the blender first. Having the liquid near the blades helps the remaining ingredients move around and blend more easily.

Step 2: Add the banana, strawberries, rolled oats, cashews, protein powder and ice. Blend until completely smooth, then add a little extra milk if you prefer a thinner consistency. That’s it. Enjoy your fresh strawberry smoothie!

FAQ

Can I use frozen strawberries or banana?

Yes. Frozen fruit makes the strawberry banana smoothie colder and thicker, so you can reduce or leave out the ice. Add a little extra milk if your blender needs some encouragement. Freezing the fruit when it is overripe (but not too far gone) is

Do I need to add protein powder?

No, the protein powder is completely optional. The oats and cashews still give the smoothie a creamy texture and make it more filling. If you add protein powder, plain or vanilla works best.

Can I make this strawberry banana smoothie dairy-free?

Yes. Replace the full-cream milk with your preferred plant-based milk and use a dairy-free protein powder, if adding it.

Can I make this smoothie nut-free?

Simply leave out the cashews. The smoothie won’t be quite as rich, but the banana and oats will still give it a lovely creamy texture. Alternatively, you can replace with 1 tablespoon of chia seeds

Can I prepare the smoothie ahead of time?

It’s best enjoyed straight after blending, but you can store it in a sealed jar or bottle in the fridge for up to one day. Give it a good shake or another blitz before drinking, as the ingredients will naturally separate.

Can I use an overripe banana?

It’s better if you do. A soft, spotty banana adds natural sweetness and blends beautifully, making this smoothie a handy way to use a banana that might otherwise be forgotten in the fruit bowl.
