Creamy Potato Bake
Creamy Potato Bake (also potato gratin or Dauphinoise Potatoes) is one of the best comfort foods. Few dishes can match the rich, indulgent flavour of this side. It is a family favourite in our house and a great way to change up the sides of a Sunday roast. Not to mention the perfect addition to Christmas lunch.
Cubes of mozzarella between layers of tender, thinly sliced potatoes, smothered in rich, velvety cream and topped with golden, melted cheese. This cheesy potato bake is simple and satisfying and a hit every time it is served. Try it alongside my Chicken Breasts with Stroganoff Sauce.
The Perfect Creamy Potato Bake
To make the perfect Creamy Potato Bake, you only need four main ingredients, potatoes, cream, mozzarella and cheddar.
Russett potatoes hold their shape beautifully and are great for the Creamy Potato Bake. But any supermarket potato will do. Because you are par-boiling, peel the potatoes and slice them no thinner than 5mm. Slicing as evenly as possible to ensure they cook through at the same time. A mandoline is great for this, but not a must. Par-boiling not only helps reduce the oven time, but the use of stock also adds another depth of flavour.
The sauce is simply made with cream, salt and pepper. However, little cubes of mozzarella throughout the potato bake adds a cheesy quality not found in other bakes.
Leave yourself with some additional time incase the bake takes longer than my recipe. This can happen when; the potatoes are cut too thick, they weren’t cooked for long enough on the stove, they are packed too tightly in the baking dish, or the baking dish is smaller.
Allow the potato bake to rest for a few minutes before serving. This helps the layers to set and makes it easier to slice. The result is a decadent, creamy potato bake with perfectly tender layers of potatoes, a rich cream sauce, and a crisp, cheesy topping.
Serving and Storing
Creamy Potato Bake is an incredibly versatile dish. It pairs beautifully with roasted meats like chicken, beef, or lamb. And is equally delicious alongside grilled vegetables or a simple green salad. You can also customise it. Add some sautéed onions, fresh herbs, crispy bacon, or even a sprinkle of paprika for a hint of smokiness.
To store leftovers, simply cover the dish and refrigerate for up to three days. Reheat in the oven at a low temperature to retain the creaminess, or pop it in the microwave. For an added twist, try making individual portions in ramekins for a more elegant presentation at dinner parties.
The creamy, cheesy richness of this potato bake makes it a timeless classic. It is perfect for cosy family meals or special occasions alike.
