Mexican Spice Mix is an easy homemade mix used for various Mexican dishes. I use mine for tacos, bowls and Mexican layer dip, just to name a few.

By making the mix at home there are no preservatives, and you know exactly what ingredients are included. It is also super easy to adjust to suit your household’s tastes.

If using for taco seasoning, add one tablespoon for every 500g of lean beef mince. Once the mince has browned, stir in 2 tablespoons of tomato paste and add ¾ cup of water. Then let the mix simmer, stirring occasionally, until the meat has reached the desired consistency.

Use this spice mix with my Mexican Beef Bowls recipe. These bowls are vibrant, bold and wholesome. The complementary colours, textures and flavours will see this recipe as a regular in your kitchen – like it is in mine.

Mexican Spice Mix Ingredients

Cayenne adds the heat to the Mexican Spice Mix. There is only half a teaspoon in my full batch, so feel free to increase this ingredient if you are a spice lover. The recipe as is holds enough heat for my kids, but if it were just for myself, I would definitely ramp it up a little.

The spices used in this mix are common in many Mexican dishes. Feel free to play around with different quantities of the spices to mix it up for various dishes. Add some additional paprika for enchiladas or a little acidity (some lime with the steak) for fajitas.

The cornflour helps to thicken up the sauce, without impacting on the flavour. It is also a gluten-free flour, which is perfect for certain diets and dietary preferences.

Feedback: Have you used the Mexican Spice Mix? If so, what with? I would love to read about it in the comments. Cheers, Elby!
