Orange Choc Chip Cookies are a delicious treat. A combination of one of the most loved biscuits on the planet with a citrusy orange zing. In my opinion, of all the classic biscuit options, chocolate chip cookies are the absolute best. So, how can you change a classic? By adding a classic flavour combo, and there is not much better than the tried-and-true chocolate and orange duo. Although peanut and chocolate in my Peanut Choc Chip Cookies comes close.

Whether you’re a seasoned home baker or just starting out, these treats are a must-try, and whipping them up is an absolute breeze:

  1. Cream the butter and sugar,
  2. Add the egg and vanilla,
  3. Stir in the dry ingredients,
  4. Add orange zest,
  5. Shape and cook.

There you have it, Orange Choc Chip Cookies. Easy as 1, 2, 3, (4, 5).

Texture: Adding orange rind to the biscuits changes the texture to a smooth top. Differing from the cracked edges of my traditional Chocolate Chip Cookies and Chocolate Chunk Cookies. Don’t let this deter you, it certainly doesn’t take away from the flavour.

If you prefer the cracked top, instead of stirring the rind through the dough, try sprinkling over the raw cookie dough. Gently press the rind into the top of the cookies so it doesn’t burn or fall off. Leaving the rind on top also makes for a great visual effect.

Oranges: Don’t have an orange in the house? That’s ok, swap it for chopped walnuts, pecans, almonds or macadamias. Or leave the orange out altogether and return to the traditional chocolate chip cookie option.

You only use the orange zest for this recipe. Rather than waste the rest, store the leftover orange in a container in the fridge, ready for another dish. My Orange Bircher Muesli with Walnuts will ensure you don’t waste any of the orange. Perhaps try a slice in a gin and tonic for an orange twist on a classic – I love a sneaky aperitif.

Whether you’re sharing these treats with friends, family, or enjoying them all to yourself, these Orange Choc Chip Cookies will not last long.

Ingredients

  • 225 grams unsalted butter, softened

  • ¾ cup caster sugar

  • ¾ cup brown sugar, firmly packed

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (or essence)

  • 2 ¼ cups plain flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 200 grams chocolate chips (milk or dark)

  • 2 tsp orange zest

Directions

  • Heat a fan forced oven to 170 degrees Celsius and line two cookie trays with baking paper.
  • In an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar on high for approximately 1 minute, or until light and fluffy.
  • Add the egg and vanilla and mix for a further 30 seconds, or until combined.
  • Sift in the flour, baking powder and salt and stir until just combined.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips and grated orange rind (see Note 1).
  • Place large spoons of the dough onto the trays, approximately 5cm apart. Place trays in the fridge and leave for at least 10 minutes (or longer in a hot kitchen).
  • Place in the preheated oven and cook for 12 minutes, or until browned and crisp on the outside, but still soft and chewy in the middle. Leave to cool for 5 minutes, before transferring to a cooling rack.
Get stuck into them while they are still warm!

Notes

  • Note 1: Alternatively leave the rind out until step 6. Sprinkle it on top of the raw cookies. Pressing down lightly on each cookie to ensure the rind isn’t going to fall off. I quite like this method for it’s visual effect.
