Sesame Macadamias are a delicious snack which will, whether you are hungry or not, have you coming back for more… and more. These moreish nuts make the perfect treat to enjoy on their own, but also make a great addition to a cheese board. Tempted to test your will power? Try my Cinnamon Maple Cashews or Maple Chilli Walnuts.

An ideal snack. Sweetness from the maple syrup, savouriness and additional crunch from the sesame seeds and creamy crunch from the macadamias. ‘Creamy crunch’ a bit of an oxymoron, but if you’ve bitten into a macadamia before, you’ll know what I mean. The lightly caramelised coating on the nuts is sweet enough, but not overpowering and a touch of salt balances the flavours perfectly.

Can I Exchange the Macadamias or Sesame?

Yes, the macadamias can absolutely be switched for other nuts. Almonds and cashews are favourites in our household. The recipe just stays the same and exchange the nuts for what you have in the pantry. If you swap the macadamias for another version, let me know how they were in the comments section below.

On the other hand, I wouldn’t exchange the sesame seeds. You can swap between black and white, but do not omit altogether. The toasty flavour of the sesame is what makes these macadamias (or other nuts) so good.

The Method and Storage

Sesame Macadamias are so simple to make. It is a matter of throwing all the ingredients in a bowl. Mixing well. And toasting in the oven for ten minutes, or less! It really is as simple as that. The hardest part is waiting for them to cool before you get stuck in.

Letting them cool will make sure you don’t get third degree burns on your tongue from the caramelised coating. But it will also give the nuts time to firm up for a great crunch.

Store the Sesame Macadamias in an airtight container for a week or two. At least, they can be stored for that long, but I very much doubt that they will last a two week period. 😉

They also make a fantastic gift when packaged in a pretty jar – it doesn’t matter the time of year… Christmas is always coming!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp maple syrup

  • 2 tsp olive oil

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1 1/2 cups raw macadamia nuts

  • 3 tbsp sesame seeds

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 200C | 180C fan forced and line a baking tray with paper.
  • Combine the syrup, oil and salt in a small bowl and stir in the nuts to coat.
  • Add the sesame seeds and stir through. Evenly spread over the tray in a single layer and roast for 5 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and stir to recoat in the sauce at the bottom of the tray. Transfer any that are already brown to a bowl. Roast the rest for a further 2-5 minutes depending on how quickly they are browning.
  • Remove from the oven and stir again. Leave for 5 minutes, before transferring to the bowl. Let them cool completely, stirring occasionally so they don’t all stick together. And try not to eat them all in one sitting 😉
